Orange Shirt Day

This week we learned about Orange Shirt Day and why it is important to remember that Every Child Matters. We talked about residential schools and how First Nations children were prevented from learning in their own language and culture.

As a class, we tied orange ribbons on our school yard fence to honour and remember the children who attended residential schools. It was a meaningful way for us to show that we remember, we care, and Every Child Matters.

Orange Shirt Day

Today we honoured all people who were directly impacted by the negative effects of residential school. Our takeaway is that all children should feel loved and be treated equally and fairly no matter where you live, what colour your hair and skin are or who your family is. #everychildmatters

September 30th is Orange Shirt Day

Orange Shirt Day is the day we honour the Indigenous children who were sent away to residential schools in Canada and learn more about the history of those schools. We read stories, watched videos and did some writing on this topic. Every Child Matters is the motto of this day. We used this opportunity to talk about inclusion and equality and how we all want to be treated. Each student wrote reasons why they matter on a traced arm and displayed it in the hallway.

Orange Shirt Day

Today Mr. Mason came to our school and read us a story about a girl who attended a residential school. Mr. Mason also attended a residential school when he was 8 years old. On Monday we'll wear orange to recognize that "Every Child Matters".
