We had a very special visitor at our school—Cookem Daisy! She taught us about the history of bannock and how it has been shared for generations. We listened as she told stories about her life growing up and shared her experiences as a First Nations woman.
Her stories helped us learn more about Indigenous traditions, history, and culture. We are grateful for the time she spent with us and the wisdom she shared. Thank you, Cookem Daisy! ❤️
This week the students in grades 1-4 had the opportunity to spend time with Dolorès Gosselin, a Métis Knowledge Keeper from the Red River area. She tells stories of cultural significance, and is knowledgeable about traditions and local history.
She taught each class about her drums, how they were made and the meaning behind each one. The students listened to her drumming and tried it out for themselves! At the end of the day everyone came together to have a celebration to kick off the first day! The 1/2’s showed off their treaty vests that they made with Mr. Stevenson and the 3/4’s presented a song about the signing of treaties.
The grades 1-4 students will be having lessons throughout the year with Dolorès Gosselin around the 7 Sacred Teachings. They look forward to their next sessions with her.
