The Pumpkin Drop - Testing Gravity

Thank you, Mr Dyck, for dropping our pumpkins off the school’s roof. All the pumpkins had been cleaned out and carved except for one. We wanted to test how fast they could drop to the ground. We learned that all objects free fall at the same rate regardless of their mass. And don’t worry...no pumpkins were harmed in the making of this experiment! (Well, maybe just a little smashed!) Thanks for making science a smashing good time, Mr. Dyck!

Happy Halloween!

Halloween was so much fun this year! We enjoyed dressing up, carving pumpkins, and celebrating the end of our class novel Because of Winn-Dixie. To wrap up the story, we watched the movie and snacked on treats like Dump Punch, egg salad sandwiches, and cheese whiz sandwiches. It was the perfect way to celebrate both Halloween and the completion of our book!

Do All Pumpkins Fall at the same rate?

Pumpkin Drop!

Mr. Dyck offered to climb to one of the higher spots on top of the school. He released each pumpkin while we timed it. We learned that all objects fall at the same rate regardless of their mass. Here are some of the pumpkin drop videos!

Pumpkin Time

We had a fun time doing math with pumpkins. We each got our own pumpkin to measure its mass, height, circumference and to count the number of seeds in it. We were amazed that Max’s pumpkin only had a couple of dried out seeds! Many pumpkins had hundreds of seeds! Then we carved them and enjoyed lighting them up

Pumpkin Carving

Pumpkin carving is always a favourite activity in October. We weighed and measured our pumpkins then scooped out all the goop. Next we counted all the seeds and graphed the numbers. Wow that was a lot of seeds!

Carving Pumpkins

OOEY GOEY FUN!
We weighed the pumpkins, measured the heights and circumferences. Then we counted the seeds and made a graph. Carving is next!
