Magnetic Boats & Sleds - Using the Design Process
First we made a boat out of foil and Popsicle sticks. We attached paperclips to attract to the magnet. We found out that our boat would not float. We changed our design to look like a raft. We added straws underneath to make it float. Our boat held ten marbles and the magnet pulled it around the bin of water.

First we built the bottom out of Popsicle sticks and straws. The first time it didn't hold the marbles because they rolled off. We had to build sides to hold the marbles. We also put a layer of Popsicle sticks on the bottom and built a tower of paperclips to be attracted by the magnet. Our boat worked!

First we tried to attach a magnet with plasticine but it was too heavy and it tipped the boat. We tried gluing more Popsicle sticks to make a flatter base. It still did not float but it held ten marbles. We think it doesn't float because it needs a bigger base and it's too heavy.

I built a sled out of cardboard, clay, pompoms and paperclips. I attached a magnet to the front of the sled. When the magnet came close to the paperclips the sled moved up the hill. The person stayed attached to the sled. My second design I tried attaching a magnet to the back of the sled and tried to push the sled up the hill. The sled moved by repelling. I learned that same poles repel and opposite poles attract.

Our first design did not work too well because the magnet would stick to the paperclip and pull the magnet up the hill. There was too much weight in the front. For our second design we attached a second magnet to the back of the sled and we used a magnet to push the magnet up the hill. The magnets repelled each other. We tied Frankie to the sled.

We made a boat out of Styrofoam. We decorated it and added a magnet strip. We put it into the water and it tipped over. Our second time we added foil, lots of paperclips, and toothpicks to hold it together. It tipped over again. We removed all the extra things and details and it floated and held ten marbles. We held the magnet and the boat floated towards it. We learned that the heavier we made the boat the more it tipped. We shouldn't add any more weight.

T.W.A.S.
This week at school we got a new student. He is in grade 3. His name is Sam. Mr. Petty was a guest teacher. He taught us about magnets and we played hotseat and hangman. We finished our work on writing. I'm done my Christmas tradition and my snowman story.

Ian's TWAS
We had an assembly for our tickets and a lot of people got prizes. We set up a Christmas tree and we decorated the Christmas tree and it looks beautiful. For our Christmas concert we sang Christmas rush and this little light of mine. In volleyball yesterday the other team won it was 12 to 19. Ginger brought an advent calendar and I got the chocolate today. On Tuesday Ms.Huot is retiring and I am going to miss her.

Alex' TWAS
Yesterday we did word work in groups. Group 6 did keyboard, group 5 alpharoni soup, group 4 plasticine, group 3 alphabet stamps, group 2 bendaroos and group 1 magnetic letters. We watched Shiloh it was fun. My favorite part was when Judd Travers yelled like a cowboy woowee that was funny. I passed math facts -8. Now I am on -10s and -9s.

Our Amaryllis
Our Amaryllis Plant
We planted an amaryllis bulb in potting soil. We watered it. We made predictions about how it will grow. It measures 3 cm.
Ian - I predict the amaryllis will grow 2 cm everyday.
Haylee - I predict the flowers will be light red.
Harshita - I think the amaryllis will grow 1 flower.
Emilie - I think the amaryllis will grow 1 flower.
Richclyde - I predict the amaryllis will grow 2 cm everyday.
Tate - I predict the flowers will be red.
Ginger - I predict the plant will get very big and possibly grow another plant.
Alex - I think it will grow only 1 flower and be 10 cm tall.
Ashton - I think it will grow 2 cm everyday.
Mikayla - I think it will be and it will have 12 petals. I think 2 flowers will grow.

This week at school we learned about how the stem is an important part of the plant. We put freshly cut carnations and celery into cups of water mixed with food coloring. Within two hours we noticed that both were changing really fast. We cut open the celery to see the tiny tubes inside that
carry the water to the rest of the plant. The stem also holds up the plant. To learn more about plants we also watched a Bill Nye video. He told us about a plant that eats meat! It's the venus flytrap! He also explained why leaves change color in the fall. They stop making their own food for a while.
We finished our experiment this week. We learned that plants need water, sunlight and air to grow into a healthy plant.

My last football practice we learned how to be an outside linebacker and an inside linebacker. At the Bombers field we had fun. Boomer and Buzz were there. I met players from the Bison, the Bombers and the Rifles. And my favourite player was a centre and he was playing quarterback. The numbers were number 5 and 12.by Alex Sabourin
