Scotland

Joshua’s Scottish roots led him to choose Scotland for his research project. He taught us about several food items that originated in Scotland such as shortbread and shared his experience in helping to prepare a Scottish meal. We also toured ancient castles in Edinburg and talked about the myth of the monster that may have been sighted in LochNess Lake. 








New Zealand

Brianna took us on a tour of New Zealand’s beautiful landscapes and beaches using Google Earth. We learned that People speak mostly English in New Zealand however some words have different meanings. Brianna prepared a game to teach us some of the local slang. “Lollies” are candy, “togs” are swimsuits, “hard case” refers to someone who is funny, “chur” means thank you. Did you know that the movie

Mexico

Ashton took us on a tour of Mexico’s beaches and Mexico City. Ashton taught us that Iguanas are found in Mexico although a large one is rarely seen. Posole is a traditional stew that locals enjoy. Ashton brought Mexican pesos and we all thought he was rich! Did you know that 240 pesos only equals $14.65 in Canadian currency? 



Russia

Ayden taught us that Russia’s population is over 140 million! That’s more than four times Canada’s population! Ayden also shared that many Russians are superstitious and kids are taught not to smile in school. In Russia a smile is not used to show politeness as is more customary in North America. Smiling is reserved to show a good relationship between people. Ayden also brought in some souvenirs and coins from a local resident. Thank you for sharing! 





Spain

Keira taught us some interesting facts about Spain such as wind and solar energy produces 40% of the country’s energy. Keira took us on a tour of Barcelona, Madrid and Segovia. Some castles are over 500 years old! Keira shared her experience baking churros under Cheeko’s supervision. Good job Keira! 




Ireland

The next country we explored was Ireland. Rocky explained that the national sport in Ireland is rugby and Irish stew is a popular dish. We explored the old city of Dublin using Google Earth. Did you know that there are more sheep than people in Ireland? 



Cuba

Carson travelled to Cuba when he was little which made choosing to research this country easy! He brought some Cuban pesos, musical instruments and other souvenirs and pictures. Carson shared his experience baking flan, a popular dessert in Cuba. Using Google Earth we explored the beautiful beaches. Did you know that Cuba is home to the world’s smallest bird called the beehumingbird? Thank you for sharing Carson!




England

Max took us to England and we learned about Queen Elizabeth, London and fish and chips. We travelled using Google Earth to explore Stonehenge, Big Ben and the Lake District. He also brought some souvenirs to show the class. Did you know that the first mass-produced toothbrush came from England?
